Nogay's 25th career win, O'Neill's two-hit shutout highlight sweep of GCC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Eddie Nogay faced the minimum through five innings and moved into a second-place tie for career pitching wins at Washington & Jefferson College after the Presidents defeated Grove City College 5-2 Monday in the first game of a PAC baseball doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park.

W&J completed the sweep with a 6-0 shutout in game two behind a two-hit shutout from Brian O'Neill.  O'Neill came within two outs of tossing the first no-hitter in Presidents' recent history.

Nogay fired his ninth career complete game to improve to 25-2 as a President.  The 25 victories tie Dave Trushel '12 for second place in W&J history, only one behind career victory leader Sam Mann '07.  Nogay limited the Wolverines (4-9, 2-2 PAC) to two unearned runs (both scored during sixth inning) on five hits, while striking out a pair.  He issued one walk.

The Presidents (9-7, 4-1 PAC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second when Kyle Smith homered for the second-straight game, a two-run shot to left center.  Ronny Peirish jump started a three-run fourth inning with a RBI double that scored Josh Staniscia, who tripled.  Smith and Nick Vento followed with run-scoring singles as W&J extended its lead to five.

After allowing two in the sixth, W&J closed out the Wolverines in the seventh when McLain started a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Smith and Peirish led the W&J lineup with two hits and two runs scored.  Smith added three runs batted in.

O'Neill did not allow a hit until Matt Corner's single to left center with one out in the seventh.  After a strikeout, the Wolverines notched another single before O'Neill retired the final batter on strikes.  He struck out eight Wolverines and walked four, three of which came during the first two innings.

Staniscia and Ronny Peirish both produced RBI ground outs in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.  The Presidents plated three runs in the fourth, the first of which came on Adam Larue's bases-loaded single.  A fielding error brought home the second run and Staniscia beat out an infield single to bring home the fifth run.  Michalski singled in the final run in the sixth.

Michalski had two hits and scored a run in the second game, while Staniscia knocked in a pair.  Derek Helbing also scored twice after drawing two walks.
