Box Score 2 NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. --
Jared Baird and
Kyle McLain combined on a two-hit shutout Tuesday to lead Washington & Jefferson's 3-0 PAC baseball victory over Westminster in game one of a doubleheader.
Josh Staniscia had three hits and stole three bases in game two as W&J completed its second-straight league sweep with a 9-3 victory over the Titans.
The Baird-McLain duo helped the W&J pitching staff stretch its unearned run streak to 25 1/3 innings. Baird did not allow a hit until Sean Coyne's infield single with two outs in the sixth inning. The Titans (5-11, 2-4 PAC) had their first two batters reach base in the seventh, but McLain came on to induce a line-drive double play and a strikeout with the bases loaded to end it. McLain's sixth save of the season ties Jim Pasquine '09 for the W&J single-season record. Pasquine notched his six saves in 2008.
W&J (11-7, 6-1 PAC), which has won five consecutive games, scored first in the fourth when McLain came up and grounded into a fielder's choice, but an error allowed DJ Michalski to score from second base.
Nick Vento led off the fifth with a single and came around to score on Derek McIlvane's base hit.
Tyler Schultz singled home
Ronny Peirish for the third and final run in the sixth. Peirish reached base after being hit by a pitch for the third time during the afternoon.
Baird allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out five Titans. Scott Hanicak suffered the loss for Westminster after giving up two earned runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.
In game two, Staniscia (2 singles, 1 double), McLain (2 singles, 1 double) and Michalski all collected three-hit games. McLain knocked in a pair of runs, while Stanscia and
Derek Helbing both scored twice.
McLain rapped a single to center field in the first inning for the game's first run before the Titans tied the game in the bottom half, ending the Presidents' unearned run inning streak at 25 2/3.
McLain's infield single in the third helped bring home Staniscia with the second run after a throwing error.
Kyle Smith followed with a RBI double and W&J led 3-1.
Staniscia's run-scoring single in the fourth made it a 4-1 game and W&J broke it open with three in the fifth.
Anthony Paladino's RBI double highlighted the inning.
Vizzini worked three innings (2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K) before giving way to
Joe Vita, who limited the Titans to one unearned run on one hit. Vita collected his second win of his collegiate career in relief.
Nick Comport tossed a scoreless seventh to close out the victory.
Seven different Presidents had at least one of the team's 15 hits (10 singles, 5 doubles). W&J also stole six bases.
The Presidents will play at No. 18 Mount Union tomorrow in a non-conference game at 4:00 pm.
