No. 21 CWRU sweeps W&J at Nobby's Ballpark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Ohio -- No. 21 Case Western Reserve won in walk off fashion in game one by a 3-2 margin (11 innings) and then completed a baseball sweep of Washington & Jefferson with an 8-2 victory in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark.

The Spartans (21-7) denied W&J right-handed pitcher Eddie Nogay from breaking the school record for career pitching victories after tying game one in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Nogay worked eight innings and allowed one run on 12 hits before leaving with a 2-1 lead.  CWRU posted two hits in the bottom of the ninth off of closer Kyle McLain to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the 10th, CWRU appeared to win the game on a walk off homer.  Jordan Swisher hit a home run to left field, but was ruled to have never touched home plate and became the third out of the inning.  Case Western then clinched the win with three singles off of reliever Mike Vizzini, including Aaron Cain's game winner.

W&J (14-11) led for a majority of the opening game starting in the second inning when Ronny Peirish reached on an error and scored on Tyler Schultz's sacrifice fly.

After CWRU tied the game in the sixth, the Presidents grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth.  McLain led off with a single and came around on a Schultz base hit.  Schultz, D.J. Michalski and Nick Vento all had two hits for the Presidents.  The W&J pitching staff allowed just three runs despite 18 Spartan hits.

Case Western led 5-0 after two innings in the second contest.  The Presidents' runs came in the fifth (Nick Vento RBI single) and eighth (Josh Staniscia RBI double).

The Spartans had 15 more hits in game two, 13 of which came off of starter Brian O'Neill (6IP, 13H, 5ER, 6K).  Vento, Peirish and Kyle Smith all produced two hits in game two.
