Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson increased its lead in the Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball standings to 2 1/2 games after sweeping a doubleheader from second place Thomas More Friday at Ross Memorial Park. The Presidents trailed until the final play of game one before pulling out a 5-4 victory and then cruised to a 15-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Josh Staniscia had two hits in each game for the Presidents to tie the program record for career hits (221). He ties 2010 graduate Jim Pasquine for the school record.
Washington & Jefferson (16-11, 11-2 PAC) took advantage of two Thomas More errors in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one to earn the win.
Ronny Peirish singled in the tying run and
Kyle McLain crossed the plate with the game-winning run one batter later after
Nick Vento beat out a potential inning-ending double play ball. The throw to first base went into the TMC dugout, allowing McLain to score from third base. McLain earned the win in relief on the mound.
TMC grabbed a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Travis Miller blasted a two-run homer to right field. Staniscia doubled in
Derek McIlvaine with the first W&J run in the fifth and McLain brought in Michalski on a sacrifice fly. Vento tied the game in the sixth with an opposite-field homer.
The Saints loaded the bases in the seventh and reclaimed the lead after a high pitch from McLain got away from Peirish for a passed ball. However, Peirish answered back with his single in the bottom half of the inning.
Eddie Nogay fell short of earning his W&J record-breaking 27th career victory for a second-straight start. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed three earned run on nine hits. Andy Roenker suffered the loss after allowing two unearned runs in relief off Logan Miller (5 2/3 IP, 3ER, 9H).
The Presidents left little doubt in game two with three runs in the first and two more in the second before a nine-run explosion in the third. W&J sent 14 batters to the plate in the third inning and 12 reached base consecutively. Michalski and McLain produced two-run singles during the game-breaking inning.
Staniscia scored McIlvaine on a fielder's choice groundout in the first inning and then scored on a similar play off Peirish's bat later in the frame for a 3-0 lead. RBI singles from Michalski and Staniscia in the second made it a 5-1 game and the third-inning outburst out the game out of reach. Eleven different Presidents recorded a base hit, including
Joe Palumbo's first career home run in the sixth.
Brian O'Neill pitched four innings and held the Saints to one run on three hits to improve to 3-3.
Randall Risch worked the final two scoreless innings and limited Thomas More to a pair of hits. Staniscia had three RBI and scored twice.
The third and final game of the series is tomorrow at noon.
