Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior center fielder
Josh Staniscia produced three hits, including a first-inning double which made him Washington & Jefferson College's baseball all-time hits leader, during the Presidents' 11-5 PAC baseball victory over Thomas More Saturday at Ross Memorial Park.
The Presidents (17-11, 12-2 PAC) swept the weekend series with second-place Thomas More (15-13, 9-6 PAC) and have taken command of the conference standings in the race for hosting rights for the PAC Tournament in May.
Staniscia's three hits upped his career mark to 224, surpassing the 221 recorded by 2010 graduate Jim Pasquine. Staniscia had two singles and a double, scored once and knocked in a run during the eighth inning.
W&J fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, but
Ronny Peirish smacked a solo home run in the second to tie the game. Thomas More went back ahead 2-1 in the third, but took the lead for good in the fourth after RBI singles from
Nick Vento and
Tyler Schultz. The same duo produced similar results in the sixth as their run-scoring base hits made it a 5-2 game.
The Saints narrowed the gap to 5-4 in the seventh inning, but
Kyle Smith (2 RBI) and
Kyle McLain delivered two-out, run-scoring triples to break the game open in the bottom half of the frame. Vento later followed with a two-run double and W&J went on to earn its 17th win.
Jared Baird earned his third victory of the year on the mound after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in 6 2/3 innings (4K, 5BB).
Mike Vizzini tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and
Nick Kolat pitched the ninth to secure the victory.
Vento went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored, while Schultz, Smith and McLain all added two hits. Peirish and
Anthony Paladino both scored a pair of runs.
