11-run inning lifts Purple Raiders over Presidents

Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union scored 11 times during the third inning and defeated Washington & Jefferson 13-2 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at 23rd Street Field. 

The Purple Raiders (12-5), who were ranked 18th last week by D3baseball.com, had 16 hits and took advantage of four W&J errors, two of which occurred during the big inning. 

W&J (11-8) scored the first run of the game in the second inning when Kyle McLain led off with a single, moved to third on Kyle Smith's base hit and scored on a wild pitch. 

Mount Union sent 16 batters to the plate during the game-changing third inning.  Anthony Morino had two RBI singles during the inning for the Purple Raiders. 

W&J scored its final run in the ninth inning when Nick Gatins reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Tyler Schultz.

The Presidents had 11 hits, but left 13 men on base.  Kyle Smith went 2-for-2 with a double, while Jake Gordon was also 2-for-2 after entering the game as a designated hitter. 

Tyler Dean suffered the loss on the mound for the Presidents.  He allowed eight runs (two earned) on six hits in 2 1/3 innings.  Matt Murzynski improved to 3-0 for Mount Union after holding W&J to one run on four hits in three innings (2 K).  Four different Purple Raider pitchers tossed at least two innings. 

Washington & Jefferson returns to conference play on Saturday versus Thiel (1:00 pm) at Ross Memorial Park.
