Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Brian O'Neill pitched 6 1/3 innings for his fourth win of the season and
Kyle McLain earned the save as Washington & Jefferson edged Waynesburg 3-2 in the first game of a road PAC baseball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Presidents (19-11, 14-2 PAC) then completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in the nightcap and McLain picked up another save, his ninth of the season.
The Presidents, who swept a doubleheader for the sixth time this season, got on the scoreboard first in the first inning when
Josh Staniscia doubled with two outs and scored on
Kyle Smith's single.
Waynesburg (13-19, 9-7 PAC) tied the game in the bottom half of the first on Clay Roman's RBI single; however, the Presidents bounced back with two runs in the second.
Derek McIlvaine's RBI triple brought in
Cory Bauer and
Nick Vento followed with a run-scoring single for the 3-1 lead.
O'Neill took over from that point until running into trouble in the seventh. Two of the first three Yellow Jackets reached base and O'Neill exited for McLain, who allowed one hit before striking out the final batter. McLain is second in school history with 11 career saves.
O'Neill (4-3) allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out seven for the Presidents. Six different Presidents had hits, while
Ronny Peirish and Vento both added a stolen base.
In game two, W&J wasted little time in building a lead. McIlvaine, Vento and Staniscia all singled and RBI ground outs by Smith and McLain made it a 2-0 game. Peirish tacked on a run-scoring double for a 3-0 advantage.
McIlvaine was hit by a pitch to start the fourth inning before stealing second base and then scoring on a Vento single. Waynesburg brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but catcher
Derek Helbing threw out Neal Yakopin as he attempted to steal second base for the second out of the inning.
Peirish went 3-for-3 in game two (2 singles, 1 double), while Vento had two hits and stole a pair of bases. Staniscia produced a 2-for-4 effort at the plate and stole a base. McIlvaine also scored twice.
Mike Vizzini (1-1) earned his first win of the spring after pitching five innings and allowing two runs on five hits.
Nick Kolat (1 IP, 1H) and McLain (1 IP, 1H) preserved the Presidents' fifth-straight victory.
