W&J clinches regular-season title with road sweep of Geneva

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson swept a conference doubleheader from Geneva at 33rd Street Field on Saturday by scores of 16-1 and 6-1 to clinch the PAC regular-season championship and earn hosting rights for the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament (May 8-10) at Ross Memorial Park.

The Presidents (22-12, 17-2 PAC) won the PAC regular-season championship for the sixth consecutive year (2011 Co-Champs) and will host the league tournament for the eighth time in the past 10 seasons.  W&J has finished as the PAC's top team in the regular season nine times in 12 years under the leadership of Head Coach Jeff Mountain

In the opener, W&J scored in every inning, including three in the first.  Josh Staniscia brought in the first run on a double and Kyle Smith added a RBI single.  Derek McIlvaine had a hand in both second-inning runs as he singled home Cory Bauer with the first run, then later stole third base and scored on an error.

Ronny Peirish's sacrifice fly scored a run in the third for a 6-0 lead and the Presidents tacked on four runs in each of the next two frames.  Nick Vento singled home a pair in the fourth, while McIlvaine, Staniscia and Peirish all had run-scoring singles in the fifth.

W&J finished the game with 17 hits and was aided by six Geneva errors.  Staniscia was a home run shy of the cycle after going 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.  Peirish also knocked in three, while McIlvaine went 3-for-4 and scored three times.  Matt Fry also scored twice.

Junior left-hander Jared Baird improved to 4-0 on the mound after striking out a career-high nine batters.  He limited Geneva (11-24, 7-13) to one run on six hits in five innings.

Staniscia singled in McIlvaine for a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two and Kyle Smith made it a 2-0 game in the third when scoring on Kyle McLain's ground out.  In  the fifth inning, McLain's RBI triple and Peirish's RBI single upped the lead to 4-0 and W&J cruised to its 22nd victory.

Nick Kolat (2-0) tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings (5H, 2BB, 4K) to earn the win for W&J.  Staniscia had another three-hit game to up his school-record career hit total to 235.  He also leads the Presidents with 33 runs batted in.  McIlvaine scored twice to increase his team-high run total to 32.
