Eight-run fifth inning powers W&J to 11-5 win at Grove City

Box Score GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson scored eight times in the fifth inning en route to an 11-5 Presidents' Athletic Conference road victory at Grove City Monday.  The game was played under rainy conditions all afternoon before being called after eight innings.

The Presidents (23-12, 18-2 PAC), who are averaging 10.3 runs in their last nine games, have won 10 consecutive PAC contests and have not suffered a league loss since April 6.

Grove City (9-22, 7-15) scored a pair of runs in the third inning to grab the early lead.  W&J got a run back in the fourth when Josh Staniscia singled and eventually scored on a throwing error.

The complexion of the game changed in the fifth when Washington & Jefferson sent 13 men to the plate and scored eight runs.  Derek McIlvaine tied the game with a RBI single and Anthony Paladino put the Presidents in front for the first time after scoring on a balk.  McIlvaine scored on a Staniscia sacrifice fly before Tyler Schultz drew a bases-loaded walk.  Cory Bauer's second single of the inning brought home two runs and McIlvaine accomplished the same two batters later.

After Grove City narrowed the gap to 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth, Schultz scored two with a single in the sixth inning for a three-RBI day.

Five different Presidents had multi-hit games led by Staniscia, who went 3-for-3 and scored twice.  Ronny Peirish also scored two times and stole a pair of bases.

Brian O'Neill pitched five innings for his fifth win of the season.  He allowed five runs on 11 hits and struck out three.  Mike Vizzini notched the save after tossing three innings of one-hit ball and striking out three Wolverines.  Andrew Taylor suffered the loss for GCC after giving up three runs on six hits in four innings.
