Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 10-7 PAC baseball victory over Washington & Jefferson on Sunday afternoon. The Tomcats (7-14, 1-9 PAC) took the final game of the weekend series after W&J (13-9, 8-2 PAC) swept a doubleheader yesterday.
Thiel started quickly with three runs in the first inning, but W&J tied the game with a run in the second and two more in the fourth.
Derek McIlvaine's bases-loaded single brought in
Nick Vento with the first run, while
Josh Staniscia doubled home a pair in the fourth.
Washington & Jefferson appeared to take control of the game with three runs in the top of the fifth.
Kyle McLain started the inning with a single and came around to score on
Tyler Schultz's base hit. Schultz scored on
Anthony Paladino's RBI single and
D.J. Michalski later added a double which Paladino trotted home on.
Thiel quickly erased their only deficit of the game with six runs in the bottom half of the frame. Three different pitchers were used by W&J during the inning in which the Tomcats racked up seven hits.
W&J got one run back in the seventh inning when Schultz reached on an error and scored after Paladino was caught in a run-down on a pickoff attempt. The Presidents then hit into double plays in the final two innings and Thiel recorded its first conference win.
Joe Vita took the loss in relief for W&J after being touched up for four runs on four hits in the fifth.
Jared Baird started and allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits in four innings.
Mike Vizzini kept the Presidents in the game by tossing the final 3 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.
McIlvane went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Washington & Jefferson, while McLain, Michalski and Paladino all produced two hits.
Trent Smith and Josh Doody both had two hits and two RBI for the Tomcats. Pat Duncan hurled 3 1/3 innings of two-hit relief for his first win of the year.
