Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Brad Popham's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning gave second-seeded Thomas More an 8-7 lead and the Saints hung on to defeat top-seeded Washington & Jefferson, claiming the 2014 Presidents' Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Championship at Ross Memorial Park.
The Saints (23-17) earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament and won their third PAC Tournament championship, while the Presidents (29-15) will have to await word on a possible Pool C at-large bid to the national tournament.
The game featured a two-hour, four-minute rain delay which halted play in the bottom of the eighth with TMC leading 7-6.
W&J forced extra innings in the bottom of the ninth on
Josh Staniscia's sacrifice fly that scored
Michael Ruffing.
The Saints, who rallied from a 6-0 deficit against W&J Friday before earning a 9-6 triumph, came from behind again Saturday as the Presidents led 3-0 after one inning and 5-1 after three. Four of the Presidents' first five runs were unearned.
Kyle McLain had RBI singles in both the first and third.
Thomas More closed to within 5-4 in the fourth, but
Michael Ruffing's two-out RBI single in the sixth made it a 6-4 game. The Presidents nearly stretched the lead to 7-4 on the play, but Casey Metzger's throw to home to Popham nailed McLain just before he touched the plate.
Another three-run inning for the Saints in the seventh gave the visitors their first lead. Jason Handley and Craig Hyson supplied RBI doubles and Donovan Pogue's ground out brought in Hyson with the go-ahead run.
After the long rain delay, Ruffing singled with one out in the ninth.
D.J. Michalski was hit by a pitch and both runners then moved up a base following a balk. Staniscia tied the game with his sacrifice fly to left field, but the Saints were able to remain in the game after a nice play by Travis Miller at third base on a hard ground ball by
Ronny Peirish for the final out of the inning.
Miller led off the 10th with a single and moved to third following an error. Popham put TMC in front with his sacrifice fly to right field.
McLain singled on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth to keep W&J alive, but Ken Ruberg got the next batter to pop out to Hyson in foul territory, setting off the Saints' celebration.
McLain led W&J with four hits and two runs batted in. He took the loss on the mound after allowing the unearned run in the 10th. He pitched two innings of relief after the rain delay and allowed one hit.
Eddie Nogay, who pitched eight innings Thursday night, came on in relief of
Jared Baird and pitched the seventh and eighth innings, surrendering one run on one hit. Baird gave up six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in six innings and struck out five.
Ruffing added three hits, while Staniscia and
Kyle Smith both produced two hits and scored twice.
Ruberg pitched the final 3 2/3 innings for the Saints and limited W&J to one run on three hits. Andy Roenker started and lasted 6 1/3 innings (2 ER, 10 H, 2 BB, 2 K). Every player in the Saints' starting lineup had at least one hit.
