Wild comeback fuels PAC baseball sweep of Saint Vincent

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Nick Vento's one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one brought home Cory Bauer with the game-winning run to cap a three-run rally and give Washington & Jefferson a wild 6-5 PAC baseball victory over Saint Vincent on Senior Day Saturday at Ross Memorial Park. In game two, W&J completed the sweep with an 8-2 triumph.

The Presidents (27-12, 21-2 PAC) trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but rallied with three hits to earn the win.  D.J. Michalski had the key hit, a two-run triple down the right field line that scooted past the right fielder and went to the wall.  After a pair of intentional walks, Vento set off a celebration with with line drive to right center field.

Saint Vincent (17-21, 11-12 PAC) never trailed until the final play of the game.  The Bearcats grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before adding single runs in the second and third for a 4-0 advantage.

W&J cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third on Matt Fry's RBI single.  Vento grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth to trim the lead to 4-2 and Kyle McLain followed with a sacrifice fly to narrow the gap to 4-3.

SVC added a run in the fifth inning, but W&J erased that with the rally in the seventh.  Mike Vizzini pitched the seventh inning and earned his ninth career victory (2-1 this season) after striking out a pair.  Eddie Nogay tossed the first six innings and kept W&J in the game despite scattering 13 hits (2K, 1BB).  Michalski and Vento both had two hits and two RBI.

Joey Fearer and Ben Webb notched three-hit games for SVC.  Greg Martin suffered the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in two innings of relief.

Brian O'Neill (6-3) pitched his fifth career complete game in the second contest to earn the win on the mound, the 18th of his career.  He held the Bearcats to two runs on six hits, while striking out two.

After the first four and a half scoreless innings, W&J erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Tyler Schultz singled in Kyle McLain with the first run, while Anthony Paladino made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly.  Vento then knocked in two with a double to right center field.

Saint Vincent cut the lead in half with two runs in the sixth, but W&J answered with four in the bottom half to break the game open.  Paladino's two-run single started the four-run spurt which put the game out of reach.

Schultz and Derek McIlvaine led the lineup with two hits in game two, while Derek Helbing scored twice.

Steve Janik suffered the loss for Saint Vincent after allowing four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.  Tanner Master had a two-run single to pace the SVC offense.
