SVC edges W&J 3-2 in regular-season finale

Box Score LATROBE, Pa. -- Joey Fearer pitched a complete game and Saint Vincent scored twice in the eighth inning to earn a 3-2 PAC baseball victory over Washington & Jefferson on Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Ballfield.

The Presidents (27-13, 21-3 PAC), who had their eight-game win streak snapped, tied the conference record for single-season victories set by the 2012 W&J squad.  As the regular-season league champion, W&J will now host the PAC Tournament starting Thursday at Ross Memorial Park.  The Presidents will play fourth-seeded Waynesburg Thursday at 6:00 pm in their first game of the tournament.  No. 2 Thomas More faces No. 3 Bethany in Thursday's opener at 3:00 pm.

Michael Ruffing drew a lead off walk on the first at-bat of the game and he eventually came around to score and make it a 1-0 game on Ronny Peirish's single.

The score remained that way until the fifth inning when Derek McIlvaine smacked a leadoff double and scored on Cory Bauer's sacrifice fly.

W&J starting pitcher Jared Baird allowed his first run of the game in the sixth when Ben Webb produced a RBI single. Baird left with a 2-1 lead after seven innings of five-hit ball (5K, 0BB).

Saint Vincent (18-21, 12-12 PAC) took advantage of an error and a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth to grab its first lead.  McIlvaine singled with one out in the ninth, but Fearer worked out of it to record the complete game.  He limited the Presidents to eight hits and struck out four.

McIlvaine had three of the W&J hits, while Peirish added a pair.  Nick Kolat suffered the loss in relief, allowing the two unearned runs in the eighth.
