Ronny Peirish hit a pair of three-run homers in the top of the first inning as top-seeded Washington & Jefferson scored 11 times en route to posting a 16-9 PAC Baseball Tournament victory over fourth-seeded Waynesburg in an elimination game Friday night at Ross Memorial Park.
Peirish tied a NCAA Division III record with two home runs in one inning and his six runs batted in tied for the eighth-highest total during a single inning in NCAA Division III history.
Josh Staniscia added four hits, knocked in four and scored four times for the Presidents (29-14), who will play Thomas More for the championship Saturday at 1:00 pm. W&J will need to defeat the second-seeded Saints twice to earn the title and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Joe Vita (3-2) collected the victory on the mound for W&J. He pitched six innings and surrendered seven runs on 11 hits (1 K).
Waynesburg used three different pitchers in the first inning and starter Derek Zavataky took the loss (1/3 IP, 5 ER, 5H).
W&J sent 15 batters to the plate during the first inning in which it collected 10 hits. In addition to Peirish's historic two homers, Staniscia had two singles and three RBI.
Nick Vento also singled twice and scored on both Peirish round trippers.
Ruffing doubled home a run in the second and W&J tacked on three more runs in the fourth for a 16-3 lead.
Ruffing and Vento both had three hits and scored three runs, while
Derek McIlvaine added a three-hit evening. The top four starters in the W&J lineup combined for 12 hits, 12 runs scored and 12 RBI. W&J had 19 of the game's 32 overall hits.
