How it Happened: In the first round of the 2015 Men's Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship, Washington & Jefferson faced off against the United States Naval Academy and fell, 19-9.
The Midshipmen opened scoring early in the game, gaining 3-0 and holding on to the lead as the Presidents made it on the board but were unable to find momentum, finishing the first quarter 6-2.
W&J opened scoring in the second quarter, following over two and a half minutes of scoreless action. The drive was short lived, as Navy scored another three. W&J answered with 1:25 left, but Navy responded once again shortly after, wrapping the second up at 4-2.
Navy was able to get on the board twice within the first 62 seconds following the half. The Presidents found the back of the net at 6:10 in the third quarter, but the Midshipmen struck again when the posted two more. W&J attempted to shave the margin by tallying another, but Navy increased its lead with 10 seconds left, ending the quarter at 5-2.
The Presidents led in the fourth quarter, opening with two goals, one at full-strength and another on a power-play, but the Mids tied it up soon after, scoring twice. Following W&J posting one more, Navy recorded a goal on a five meter penalty shot and followed it up with one final tally with eight seconds left, giving the fourth quarter a score of 4-3 and the match a score of 19-9.
Top Performers: Patrick Fredrick led the Presidents on the offensive, putting up a team-high five points, scoring three in the fourth quarter.
Nicholas Willison also contributed with a hat trick.
Mac Hennessy was in the cage for three quarters of the game, posting four blocks.
The Rest: Brent Trewhella also registered a point for W&J, while
Zach Bacchus made a save in the final quarter.
What's Next: Washington & Jefferson will continue in the CWPA championship, taking on George Washington at 12:40 pm on Nov. 21. W&J is 1-1 against George Washington this season, and a win will advance the Presidents to Sunday's ninth place match. Â Â
