2015 Mideast Regional Preview

2015 NCAA DIVISION III MIDEAST REGIONAL TOURNAMENT WEBSITE

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Six teams spanning five states will begin competition Wednesday for the right to compete in the 2015 Division III World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin. For the first time, Washington & Jefferson's Ross Memorial Park will host the regional.

Arguably one of the toughest regions in the country, the mideast region will feature three teams ranked in the top 10 in the country, led by No. 2 Frostburg State. Heidelberg and Shenandoah will represent the region as well, ranked 9th and 10th, respectively.

Two of the other teams -- Adrian and La Roche -- are in the other receiving votes. Which leads us to our final team in the field, Washington and Jefferson. It came down to the last day of competition, but the Presidents pulled off the upset of top-seeded Thomas More in the PAC Conference Championship to give the field more of a home feeling to it.

With the story lines shaping form, the next few days promises not to disappoint.

The following are previews of what is to come in the first round matchups.

No. 1 Frostburg State (37-6) vs. No. 6 Washington and Jefferson (28-15)
Although they would have been a lock for an at-large bid, the Bobcats secured their spot as the top-seed in the region as the winners of the Capital Athletic Conference. Just under two hours away, the men from Maryland should have a strong support group. With that said, they are going to have trouble fighting off the momentum the home team is going to throw at them. The Presidents are coming off their 10th Presidents Athletic Conference title to earn the automatic bid where they defeated Thomas More in a winner-take-all championship. The Presidents defeated the Bobcats last year 6-4 in the regular season, but FSU exacted revenge earlier this season at Ross Memorial Park with a 5-0 victory. Both teams missed the regional tournament last year.

No. 2 Adrian (33-10) vs. No. 5 Shenandoah (27-8-1)
The Bulldogs will travel from Michigan after winning the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Bulldogs have been a staple in the regional round, making it for the eighth straight year. The second seed is the highest they have been in school history in the regional round and are looking to build on their success from last year when they lost in the Midwest regional championship to eventual national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Hornets are traveling from Virginia after winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship. The Hornets are making their second straight appearance in the regionals after competing in the South region last year.

No. 3 Heidelberg (31-12) vs. No. 4 La Roche (30-11)
The Student Princes lost in the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship to Marietta but was able to sneak in with one of the few at-large bids being served out in the region. This game is a rematch from May 2 when Heidelberg outslugged La Roche 12-9. It is the second straight year both the Student Princes and Redhawks are making the regional round. The Redhawks, who will serve as the second local team from the Pittsburgh area, defeated Penn-State Behrend in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference to earn the automatic bid. The Redhawks lost to the Student Princes each of the past two years in the regular season.
