Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Washington & Jefferson saw a couple of miscues come back to haunt it in a 6-4 loss to Farmingdale State at Lake Myrtle Park.
In a matchup of teams that qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament last season, W&J drops to 5-4 this year, while FSC improves to 2-8.
The Rams scored single runs in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead through three frames. The second inning saw the home team get a two-out infield single to put runners on the corners and then the runner from third scored before the runner at first was tagged out during a rundown. The third inning had a runner reach on an error and a bunt single to put two on with one out, and later a run came in to score before the trailing runner was thrown out at the plate on a throw by left fielder
Joe Palumbo to catcher
Dan Trettel.
The Presidents tied the game up in the top of the fourth as
Nick Gatins hustled for a one-out double to right center that snuck through the infield, and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. A Palumbo double to right center drove in Gatins and
Mark Merlino's single put Palumbo to third before eventually scoring on Trettel's ground out to second, 2-2.
FSC regained the lead with two unearned runs in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the fifth to hold a 5-2 lead before W&J got the game within one courtesy of a two spot in the seventh. Back-to-back singles by
Michael Ruffing and
Anthony Paladino opened the inning and chased Rams' starter Kenneth Simco. A one-out infield single by
Josh Crummer loaded the bases and
Ryan Sciullo drew a bases loaded walk to plate the first run and Gatins brought in
Nick Vento, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier, on a sacrifice fly, 5-4.
Farmingdale State scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and W&J was retired 1-2-3 in the ninth to suffer the 6-4 nonconference setback.
Vento and Crummer, W&J's three and four hitters, each tallied two hits as eight of the nine starters had a hit in the game.
Starting pitcher
Tim Mulvey (0-1) was saddled with the loss, working 5.0 inning and scattering eight hits and five runs (two earned) with a pair of strike outs and one walk.
W&J will wrap up its appearance at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with an 11:15 am first pitch against Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday, March 23 at Lake Myrtle Field 6.
