DANBURY, Conn. -- The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced Monday afternoon that Washington & Jefferson has earned the top seed and potential hosting rights throughout the upcoming ECAC Division IIIÂ Women's Basketball Championship Tournament.
Â
The Presidents will host the final three days of the tournament and, as the tournament's top seed, earn a first-round bye into the quarterfinal round on Friday, March 2, where they will play the winner of third-seeded William Paterson/second-seeded Hunter (N.Y.).
Â
W&J enters the ECAC Division III Tournament with a 22-5 overall record and finished the regular season with a 15-3 mark in Presidents' Athletic Conference games, falling in the PAC Championship game to Thomas More. The berth to this year's ECAC Division III Tournament marks the 14th postseason appearance in program history and seventh in an ECAC Tournament.
Â
The Presidents are headed by 14th-year head coach
Jina DeRubbo who was named the PAC Coach of the Year for the seventh time in her career after leading W&J to its 11th 20-win season under her direction and the fifth in the last six years. This year's team is currently tied for the sixth-most wins in a single season and can clinch the winningest season in program lore with an ECAC Tournament championship.
Â
On the court, the Presidents are led by senior and All-PAC First Team point guard
Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon). In her final season wearing the Red and Black, Moore leads the team with a career-best 14.1 points per game to go along with 3.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Moore has scored 1,094 points in her career, the 13th most in program history and is shooting a career-high 78.6 percent from the free throw line.
Â
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and
Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) also provide double-digit scoring for the Presidents with Parker coming in just behind Moore at 13.7 points per game while Gilbert is averaging 12.5 points per game. Parker leads the Presidents with 8.1 rebounds per game and seven double-doubles this season, earning a spot on the All-PAC Second Team, while Gilbert has made a team-high 46 three-pointers and was named the PAC Freshman of the Year and an All-PAC Honorable Mention.
Ticket prices for this weekend are: $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. W&J students and children under 10 will be admitted for free. No complimentary tickets will be issued. $2 from every ticket sold will benefit The V Foundation for cancer research.
