WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson swimming & diving teams opened the 2022-23 season by hosting Penn State Altoona at Henry Memorial Natatorium on Saturday evening.
The W&J women lost by a 168-89 margin while the men lost by a 194-52 score.
W&J was paced by
Molly Nielsen (Erie, Pa. / Harbor Creek) on the women's side, as she earned a pair of first place finishes. Nielsen placed first in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:05.29. Nielsen later earned the top spot in the 500 Freestyle, as she touched the wall with a time of 5:45.86.
Audrey Kough (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) finished second in the 50 Free. Kough logged a time of 31.31 in the event to finish as runner-up.
Taylor Newton (Olyphant, Pa. / Scranton Prep) was third in 50 Backstroke (35.55) and 100 Freestyle (1:03.02).
Alexis Griner (Valrico, Fla. / Bloomingdale) was first in the 1-Meter Diving with a score of 180.35 while
Madison Trunzo (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) was second with a score of 1:42.90.
On the men's side,
Zishuo Ma (Los Alamitos, Calif. / Los Alamitos) placed first in the 50 Breaststroke, as he won by more than a second with a time of 28.84.
Nathan Smith (Fort Defiance, Va. / Fort Defiance) was second in the 100 Butterfly. Smith narrowly missed earning the victory, as he touched the wall in 55.97.
Aidan Miller (Grove City, Ohio / St. Charles Prep) finished third in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 55.75. Miller was also third in the 50 Free with a time of 24.60.
