W&J falls to Colby to open Spring Break trip

Box Score

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson Presidents were downed by the Colby Mules by a 5-0 score Sunday afternoon in non-conference play in their first action at the RussMatt Central Invitational in Davenport, Fla. at the Northeast Regional Park complex.

Colby got off to an early lead after quickly finding a rhythm against the Presidents ace Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) as the Mules tacked on the first score of the ball game after Marcus Forte tripled then scored on a wild pitch in the second inning.

W&J quickly tried to respond in back-to-back innings as they managed to put a runner on base in each inning before the final out of each inning.

The Presidents bats remained slow for the remainder of the bout as they only managed one hit over the course of the remaining six innings. The Mules tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning off when they hit a two-run home run.

The Presidents found themselves in a jam in the sixth inning as Colby loaded the bases with no outs. Ethan Boring (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley) did his best to reduce the damage as he induced a double play and managed to allow just one run. Colby added its final run in the eighth.

Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum) had the lone extra base hit for the Presidents.

The Presidents return to the Northeast Regional Park Complex on Monday, March 20, against Keuka College. The doubleheader has a scheduled first pitch of 2 p.m.
