STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College women's swimming and diving team earned a pair of victories during Saturday's tri-meet on the road at Franciscan University. W&J bested previously-unbeaten Franciscan by a final score of 125-117 and downed Hiram by a margin of 140-88.
The 200-yard Medley relay of
Sophia Garrett (Cincinnati, Ohio / Saint Ursula Academy),
Maddie Malone (Charlottesville, Va. / Monticello),
Luna Balzano (El Portal, Fla. / Broward Virtual School), and
Amanda Graves (Irwin, Pa. / Penn Trafford) put together a strong performance, as they won by three seconds, with a time of 2:06.06.
Malone collected three first place finishes on the day. Malone was first in the 100-Breaststroke and 200-Yard Breaststroke as well as the 400-Yard individual medley.
Balzano and Garrett both finished with two individual first place finishes on the women's side. Balzano won the 100 and 200 Yard Butterfly. Garrett won the 100 Backstroke and 200 Backstroke.
Taylor Newton (Olyphant, Pa. / Scranton Prep) posted two second place finishes in the 1650 Yard freestyle (20:35.13) and the 500 Yard Freestyle (6:02.50). Newton posted a 1:06.11 in the 100 Yard Freestyle, only five seconds behind
Morgan Baughman (West Newton, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) who claimed first in the same event (1:01.90). Baughman also finished first in the 50 Freestyle and second in the 200 Freestyle.
Graves took home a second and third place finish as well for the Presidents in the 100 Back and 200 Back.
To conclude the tri-meet, the team of Balzana, Garrett, Graves and Baughman claimed the first-place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:48.77).
W&J will wrap up their Presidents' Athletic Conference dual meets next Saturday as they travel to Grove City, Pa. The PAC matchup between the Presidents and Wolverines is scheduled for a 1 P.M. start time.
