ERIE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team fell to host Penn State Behrend by an 8-1 margin in their spring season opener on Friday in Erie.
In doubles play, the sophomore duo of
Connor Simms (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon McMillan) and
Nate Clarke(New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) nearly snagged a win at doubles three in a tight 8-6 contest against William Thomas and Luke Vunora.
The Presidents went into singles play down 3-0.
Jackson Akers (Logan, W. Va. / Logan) fought hard in the second set at singles one, just falling short with a 6-2, 7-5 performance. Simms gave a strong showing at six singles yet fell to Luke Vunora in a competitive 7-6, 7-5 match.
W&J's sole victory came from junior
Abhinav Yarramaneni (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos) at third singles. Yarramaneni secured the first set against Owen Sinnott 6-2 before closing out the match in straight sets by a 6-3 score.
The Presidents will host Davis & Elkins at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center on Tuesday, February 27.
