WASHINGTON, Pa.- On Tuesday night, the Washington & Jefferson College women's volleyball team takes the court in the Salvitti Family Gymnasium for a Presidents' Athletic Conference Quarterfinals matchup against Grove City.
The Presidents finished the regular season as the No. 1 seed in the PAC's South Division, after posting a 11-5 conference record. Grove City reached the playoffs as the No. 4 ranked team out of the leagues' North Division, with a 9-7 record in the league.
"Our goal in the fall of 2022 started simple: qualify for the PAC tournament after coming off a 3-22 season as a program the fall prior," replied Head Coach
Lindsey Llewellyn. "Narrowly missing that goal in their freshman season was a huge motivator for our now seniors, who have since set the standard with three consecutive playoff appearances."
W&J looks to avenge their Oct. 10 loss when they faced Grove City at home. The Wolverines' victory was fueled by a dominant front line that recorded 15 blocks against the Presidents' attacks. Grove City also held a clear advantage offensively, posting a .242 hitting percentage to W&J's .114 percentage.
Grove City's .213 hitting percentage on the year leads the conference. The squad's 12.32 kills per set ranks second-best in the PAC.
W&J will look to dominate the service game against the Wolverines tonight, an area that the Presidents took advantage of in their prior meeting. In that contest, W&J snuck in 10 service aces while only committing five service errors. On the other hand, Grove City committed 12 errors from the service line, while only picking up five aces.
The matchup will mark the third time in four years that the Presidents have reached the postseason under Llewellyn. It will mark the second time, during that same time period, that W&J will have the opportunity to host a playoff contest. The Salvitti Family Gymnasium last hosted a playoff game two seasons ago, when the Presidents were victorious over Westminster 3-1 in a PAC quarterfinal matchup. W&J boasts a 6-3 (.667) record in its home gym this season.
"We know that we are facing a Grove City team that has not gone down easily in PAC play this season. If we hope to advance in the tournament, we need to play with the consistency and competitive drive that we've found late in this season," stated Llewellyn. "Our two wins last week came in part due to a balanced offensive and defensive effort, which will be critical if we hope to stay in the win column. We know that we are prepared for a tournament run and we hope to take that first step in front of our home crowd."
First serve on Tuesday (Nov. 11) against Grove City is set for 7:00 p.m.
