ADA, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College men's wrestling team (2-5) travelled up north to the Ohio Northern Invitational for their last tournament before the holiday break. Freshmen
Drake Buzzard (Avella, Pa./Avella Area) and
Joey Gardner (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), along with junior
Jiovanni DeChicchis (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), all placed for the Presidents. W&J finished the invitational in 10
th out of 13 teams.
DeChicchis and Gardner both led the Presidents on the day with sixth place finishes in their respective weight classes. In the 165-pound weight class, DeChicchis opened his day with three takedowns en route to an 11-3 major decision. DeChicchis fell in a close 3-0 decision in the quarterfinals to a wrestler from the hosts, Ohio Northern. In the back draw, DeChicchis picked up two additional wins to secure points for W&J.
Gardner opened up the invitational with a fall in 1:58, a 19-4 technical fall in 3:31, and a two-point reversal to upset the number two seed in the bracket. Gardner fell in the 157-pound semifinals to the No. 3 seeded wrestler from Ohio Northern.
Buzzard made a quarterfinal run in the 133-pound weight class before wrestling his way to an eighth-place finish in the back draw.
After a short break for the holidays, W&J will return to host the
Jeff Breese Invitational. The event will kick off at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 3) inside the Ross Recreation Center.
