Men’s Golf Finishes Sixth at the Fernandina Beach Collegiate to Open the Spring Season

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's golf team took a sixth-place finish at the annual Fernandina Beach Collegiate hosted by Mount St. Joseph. The team finished with a total of 911 through all three rounds.
 
The Basics
Tournament: Fernandina Beach Collegiate
Location: Fernandina Beach Golf Course
W&J: 6th out of 12
 
Top W&J Individual: Matthew Morelli (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) concluded the three-round invitational as the Presidents' top golfer, having shot a 220 over the three rounds to finish in a tie for 12th. The sophomore standout finished the week four shots over par through the par 72 course. Morelli climbed to the top 15 with a round score of 73 in the final 36 holes.
 
Notables: William Ainsworth (Woldingham, Surrey/Reigate Grammar School) finished next best golfer for the Presidents, having shot a 224 to finish in a tie for 20th. Ainsworth finished the invite eight shots over par with his best round score being 70 through the first 18. Luke Eckmann (Clancy, Mont./Jefferson) and Shane Williams (Peters Township, Pa./Peters Township) capped off the top finishers for the Presidents with ties for 35th and 38th, respectively.
 
Tournament Highlights
Top Team: Shenandoah finished as the top team at the close of all three rounds, finishing with a team score of 858. The team finished six shots under par as a team, edging second place Transylvania.
 
Top Individual: Despite being edged as a team, Transylvania finished with the top golfer at the Fernandina Beach Collegiate. Andy Steed led the Pioneers having shot a 204 over the course of the week. The next closest golfer finished seven strokes behind Steed.
 
Up Next: W&J men's golf returns to action on Saturday (March 28) for the Pennsylvania Classic hosted at Penn State University. Action will take place at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa.
