W&J Swimmers Roll Past Bethany Bison

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson men's and women's swimming & diving teams both earned Presidents' Athletic Conference wins Wednesday night over Bethany at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.

With a 147-117 win, the women's squad improved to 7-1 overall on the year and moved to 1-1 in the conference. The men's team defeated the Bison 146-103 to improve their record to 4-2-1 overall and also up their PAC record to 1-1.

Junior Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) made her 2013-14 debut and collected two individual wins, touching in at 2:02.01 in the 200 freestyle and at 55.79 in the 100 freestyle event.  Also on the women's side, sophomore Rachel Murphy (Sutherlin, Ore./Roseburg) recorded the top times in the 200 backstroke (2:18.80) and the 200 IM (2:23.79).

Junior Jennifer Suder (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) came away with top honors in both 1-meter diving and 3-meter diving. Suder dove her way to 196.55 points in the 1-meter event before accumulating a score of 205.05 during the 3-meter event.

The men's team was led by junior Ben Mancini (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Township), who scored wins in the distance freestyle events. He touched in at 10:52.94 during the 1000 race and claimed victory in the 500 freestyle with a time 5:14.74.  Classmate Mike Magdic (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) racked up a pair of wins in, swimming at a 59.02 pace in the 100 backstroke and a 52.15 pace in the 100 freestyle.

Freshman Chris Ratliff (Eldersburg, Md./Century) rounded out the list of double winners for the Presidents.  Ratliff captured the 50 freestyle (22.73) and the 100 butterfly (56.74).

Washington & Jefferson will be back in the pool this Saturday for another PAC meet when it travels to Grove City at 1:00 pm.
