Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Scranton scored eight unanswered goals in the second quarter to pull away from Washington & Jefferson and earn a 14-5 Landmark Conference men's lacrosse victory on Saturday at a rain-soaked Alexandre Stadium.
The Royals (6-4, 2-0) led 2-0 early in the game, but W&J (4-7) closed to within 2-1 after one quarter when
John Bursch scored an extra-man goal off a pass from
Kyle Heinig 10 seconds before the opening quarter ended.
Scranton dominated the second period as Gus Strum netted three goals and Alec Mikrut added a pair to push the Royal lead to 10-1 at halftime. The Royals added to their unanswered goal stretch with the first three tallies of the third period and W&J never recovered.
Scranton held a 48-25 shot advantage and won 17-of-22 faceoffs. Strum finished the game with four goals to lead to Scranton offense.
Bursch had two goals for the Presidents, while
Casey Smallwood and
Tim Angell both netted one. Angell's goal was the 95th of his career.
Conor Crowe suffered the loss after making 12 first-half saves.
W&J hopes to snap its five-match losing streak next Saturday when it travels to Washington, D.C., to face Catholic (1:00 pm).
