USMMA defeats W&J 14-6 in Landmark finale

Box Score KING'S POINT, N.Y. -- The United States Merchant Marine Academy outscored Washington & Jefferson 11-1 during the middle periods and recorded a 14-6 Landmark Conference men's lacrosse victory on Saturday morning at Brooks Stadium. 

USMMA (8-6, 2-4) received five goals from Geoff Harty and dominated the faceoff circle, winning 21 of the 22 faceoffs.  Chris Whitenack was a perfect 20-of-20 on faceoff attempts.  USMMA also outshot the Presidents (5-11, 0-6) by a 52-30 margin.

The game was tied 1-1 after 15 minutes as Tim Angell scored for W&J 100 seconds in before Harty tied the game at the 4:36 mark.

The Mariners took control with all five goals during the second quarter.  Phil Walker scored two goals during the period and USMMA broke the game wide open with the first six goals of the third period.  Angell stopped the 12-goal run by the Mariners with 33 seconds left in the third off a pass from Casey Smallwood.  

W&J scored four times in the final 15 minutes, two of which were fired home by Kyle Heinig.  Angell finished with three goals and one assist for Washington & Jefferson, while Heinig added two assists to his two tallies.  Max Kroll also collected one goal and one assist. Conor Crowe suffered the loss despite making eight saves in the opening 30 minutes.  Jacob Succop closed the game and notched 10 saves.  

Washington & Jefferson will now compete in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament starting Wednesday with the semifinals (site and time TBD).
