Volleyball splits PAC-opening matches

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team opened up Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a split in a tri-match, defeating Saint Vincent, 3-0, before losing to host Geneva, 3-0.

The Presidents opened the night with a close sweep of the Bearcats, winning by scores of 26-24, 28-26 and 25-22. In the second match of the night,W&J lost to the host Golden Tornadoes 25-21, 25-14, 25-15.

With the split, the Presidents move to 4-2 overall this season and 1-1 in the conference to begin the slate.

In the win over SVC, Nicole Bishwaty led the way with 14 kills, with Lindsey Bennett in double figures also with 12 kills. Bennett hit at a staggering .524 percentage against the Bearcats. Megan Stoehr directed the offense for 25 assists. Defensively, Allison Means posted a match-best 21 digs, while Bishwaty added 17. Stoehr (14) and Alexis Hilzendeger (12) also topped double digits in digs. Bennett and Bishwaty each collected three blocks.

Against Geneva, Taylor Freeman's six kills were a team-high with Bennett adding four kills. Means topped the Presidents with 11 digs.

W&J's next four matches are at home, with the first being a 7 p.m. start against Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
