Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. -- For the second time in as many Ohio River Lacrosse Conference matches, the Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team suffered a one-goal defeat, this time at defending league champion Transylvania.
The Presidents fall to 1-8 on the season and 0-2 to open their inaugural season in the ORLC. The Pioneers improve to an even 4-4 overall, while maintain an unblemished 3-0 mark in league matches.
In the first half, the two teams played an even game with one goal apiece in the first quarter and a pair of tallies each in the second stanza.
Devon Curran answered Transylvania's game-opening score at the 4:28 mark of the opening period to knot the game at 1-1. Twice in the second quarter,
Zach Fredericks got W&J even, scoring at 8:38 and 47 seconds (20 ticks after the Pioneers went up 3-2).
The difference in the game was the third quarter where Transylvania used three straight goals to open the second half, posting a 4-2 differential in the quarter to hold a 7-5 lead through 45 minutes. Curran added his second score of the contest with 5:59 remaining in the game, but W&J was unable to tie the game again, despite holding the Pioneers scoreless in the fourth period.
Fredericks' hat trick was a game high, with Curran adding two and
Kyle Heinig scoring the other. Seven different Pioneers found the back of the net against W&J goalie
Jacob Succop, who finished with 17 saves on the day.
Defensively,
Joseph Tritschler picked up a game-high six ground balls and forced a match-best three turnovers.
The Presidents return home to Alexandre Stadium on Saturday, April 2, for a nonconference match against Otterbein at 3:30 p.m.
