WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Both Washington & Jefferson swimming & diving teams opened up the 2017-18 season with a pair of nonconference victories over Frostburg State and Alderson Broaddus.
The men's team defeated Frostburg State, 75-61, in a meet that came down to the final event, the 4x400 relay, and toppled NCAA Division II Alderson Broaddus, 98-17. The women scored victories of 72-67 against FSU and 104-27 versus AB.
Needing a win in the 4x400 freestyle relay to close the tri-meet, the foursome of
Jeremy Glasner (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area),
Ian Geister (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley),
Matt Noel (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and
Owen Hanna (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) won by nearly 40 seconds with a time of 3:32.44.
Individually,
Zach Lauer (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) won three events: the 50 backstroke (26.60), the 200 back (2:05.40) and the 100 individual medley (57.60).
Theo Skoric (Vanderbilt, Pa./Laurel Highlands) dove to a pair of wins, scoring 201.90 on the one-meter board and 174.95 on the three-meter. Geister and Noel also claimed individual victories on the day, with Geister timing at 2:12.52 in the 200 butterfly and Noel earning a win in the 50-yard version at 25.92.
The women started the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley as the team of
Alexis Glenn (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley),
Jillian McElhaney (Butler, Pa./Butler Area),
Chloe Magyari (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and
Kiera MacWhinnie (South Portland, Maine/Waynflete School) won by .86 with a time of 1:57.08.Â
Kaitlyn Pawcio (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) earned victories on both diving boards with a 224.05 on the one-meter and 219.55 on the three-meter. Glenn and Magyari each posted individual victories as well, with Glenn securing the 200 backstroke in 2:20.33 and Magyari notching victory in the 50 butterfly at 27.94.
Both Presidents' squads will open Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, Nov. 1, hosting Chatham at 6 p.m. in the Henry Memorial Natatorium.
