Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team set a new program record with 25 goals in a 25-1 nonconference victory over La Roche in the 2017 season opener.
Kyle Heinig (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) got the Presidents on the board just under a minute into the opening quarter. Then, after going nearly eight minutes without another score,
Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) doubled the W&J lead followed by a
Jake Bow (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) goal just seven seconds later. The Presidents went on to score five more goals in the frame to take an 8-0 lead followed by a six-goal second quarter to carry a 14-0 advantage into halftime.
The Presidents' goal streak ended at 19 as La Roche was able to get on the board with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter. After two more goals in the third, W&J held a 4-0 edge for the fourth quarter to yield the final margin.
Bryan Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) finished the game with a career-high 11 points as he totaled four goals and seven assists, while Ward scored five goals and assisted on three scores to open his W&J career. Heinig scored three times, all in the first quarter, and added two assists.
Pat Heidecker (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) (four goals) and
Devon Curran (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) (two goals, two assists) both tallied four points.
Bow led the Presidents with nine ground balls and won 17-of-22 face-offs, while Ward grabbed eight ground balls and
David Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) scooped up four ground balls. Ward and
Dylan Shepherd (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) led the W&J defense with two caused turnovers apiece and eight other Presidents caused one each.
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) (1-0) earned the win in net for the Presidents as he made three saves in the game while Blake Foglio (0-1) took the loss for the Redhawks, making 11 saves in the process.
W&J held advantages in shots (60-11), shots on goal (36-4) and ground balls (49-22), plus was perfect on man-up opportunities (6-for-6) and clear attempts (11-for-11).
The Presidents will return to the field on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they travel to Baldwin Wallace for a 1 p.m. nonconference battle.
