GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson swimming and diving teams took part in the first full day of competition at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday, Feb. 9, after two preliminary diving events on Wednesday. The women finished the day with 146 points and in fourth place while the men recorded 155.5 points, good for third place.

In women's diving,
Kaitlyn Pawcio (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) and
Haley Ashner (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the three-meter event as both divers qualifying for the regionals with respective scores of 437.75 and 434.10. In the finals, Ashner finished third (450.15) while Pawcio took fifth (430.90) and
Riley Williams (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) placed seventh (343.00).
For the men,
Theo Skoric (Vanderbilt, Pa./Laurel Highlands) finished first in the one-meter dive preliminaries and also qualified for the regionals with a score of 439.20 before winning the finals with a pool-record score of 460.95.
Jacob Beckwith (Kent, Ohio/Theodore Roosevelt) finished third in the finals with a score of 337.90, improving on his fourth-place, 312.85-point performance in the preliminaries.
The women swimmers started off strong as the 200 free relay team of
Rachel Nye (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg),
Madison Babicka (Demotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley),
Maris Leonard (Pittsburgh, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) and
Chloe Magyari (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) set a new school record with a time of 1:37.34, breaking the 12-year old record by 0.66 seconds in a third-place finish. Magyari and Nye also swam the third and fourth legs of the 400 medley relay (4:06.00), preceded by
Alexis Glenn (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and
Jillian McElhaney (Butler, Pa./Butler Area), as the team finished in fourth place.
Magyari, Nye and Babicka each swam in the 50 free finals as Magyari placed fifth (24.71), Nye finished seventh (24.96) and Babicka finished eighth (24.99) while Leonard finished 13th in the B-finals (25.45).
On the men's side, the team of
Nicholas Willison (Rockford, Mich./Rockford),
Owen Hanna (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin),
Matt Noel (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and
Zach Lauer (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) opened the finals with a fourth-place finish in the 200 free relay (1:29.02).
Willison finished in fifth place in the 50 free (21.59) while Hanna finished tied for 13th (22.57) and
Ian Geister (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and
Matt Noel (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) tied for 15th (23.27) in the B-finals.
Tyler Willison (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and
Joshua Emde (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) finished ninth (4:51.05) and tenth (4:52.08), respectively after recording 12th and ninth place finishes in the preliminaries.
Lauer placed seventh in the 200 individual medley (2:00.37) while
Jeremy Glasner (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) finished in eighth place (2:00.69) after they tied each other for seventh place in the preliminaries.
W&J concluded the night with a fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay as the team of Lauer, Glasner, Geister and T. Willison recorded a time of 3:39.35
The PAC Championships will resume action tomorrow, Feb. 10, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m.
