W&J swimming & diving earns PAC dual wins against Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Washington & Jefferson College swimming & diving capped off their jam packed weekend of meets with two wins against Bethany. The Presidents claimed both wins for the men's and women's programs in close fashion. The W&J women won by an 88-78 margin while the men edged Bethany by a 89-87 score. 
 
The W&J men were led by junior Nathan Smith (Fort Defiance, Va./Fort Defiance), who posted first place finishes in the 100 butterfly (57.41) and first place in the 200 butterfly (2:17.40). Freshman Esteban Sanchez-Sink (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) was right behind Smith finishing first in the 1000 yard freestyle (12:16.57) and first place in the 100 freestyle (59.19).

Junior captain Matt Allgeier (Port Matilda, Pa. / State College Area) also posted first place finishes in the 500 freestyle (6:15.54) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.28). Rounding out the men's best individual finishes, freshman Melvin McRae (Lillington, N.C. / Overhills) placed first in the 50 freestyle (26.09).

The men's team also took first place in the 200 freestyle relay which included a team of Sanchez-Sink, Allgeier, McRae, and Smith with a time of 1:41.29. The men finished the day with an 89-87 victory over Bethany and move to 1-2 on the season (1-1 PAC).

On the women's side, freshman Madison Trunzo (Elizabethtown, Pa./Cedar Cliff) accumulated a score of 425.95 in the one-meter dives to give W&J nine diving points. 

Molly Nielsen (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) placed first in the 100 freestyle (59.00) and the 200 freestyle (2:08.25). Sophomore Taylor Newton (Olyphant, Pa./Scranton Prep) finished first in the 50 freestyle (28.38) and the 1000 freestyle (12:35.47).

Freshman Audrey Kough (Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg) also placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:11.10) and the 100 backstroke (1:20.25).

The women finished the day with an 88-78 victory over Bethany and also move to 1-2 on the season (1-1 PAC).

W&J returns to competition on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they head to Westminster College for another conference meet at 1 p.m.
