WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team recorded their first program victory over Division II West Liberty, 6-1.
The Presidents move to 6-4 on the season following their first program victory over the Hilltoppers, moving the all-time record against West Liberty to 1-2.
W&J managed to secure the firs team of the match courtesy of their doubles pairings. After a close 7-5 loss at No. 1 doubles, the Presidents bounced back in No. 2 doubles with a 6-4 win from
Jaelyn Kennedy (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and
Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch High School). W&J locked up their first team point due to a forfeit by West Liberty.
In singles, the Presidents took all but one match in a near sweep of the solo matches.
Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) kicked things off for the Presidents with a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. Kennedy followed up her doubles win with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. Freshman
Paisley Cole (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna High School) logged a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles while senior
Emma Humphrey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) an inverted 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Gumto picked up the forfeit win at No. 6 singles for the Presidents.
W&J travels to Meadville, Pa. next to square off with the Allegheny Gators for their last road match of the fall season on Sunday (Oct. 6). The bout is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
