Swimming & Diving Wins 19 Events in Sweep over Chatham

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Both Washington & Jefferson College swimming & diving teams picked up wins against Presidents' Athletic Conference foe, Chatham. The W&J women picked up a down to the wire 143-135 win while the men handled a 154-65 win.
 
The women lift to 1-4 overall on the season and 1-1 in PAC meets. The men currently hold a 2-2-1 record with an untarnished conference record of 2-0.
 
Sophia Garrett (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) stepped up big for the W&J women in their close victory over the Cougars. The sophomore raced to three first-place finishes. Garrett started her afternoon with a win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.00. In the 200-yard backstroke, she posted a first-place time of 2:23.56. In a crucial moment in the second to last event, Garrett raced to a first-place mark in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:29.18 to ensure the Presidents' win.
 
Maddie Malone (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) posted another productive weekend logging a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:43.32. Malone also tacked on two second place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:41.19 and in the 200-yard IM with a mark of 2:29.52.
 
Luna Balzano (El Portal, Fla./Broward Virtual School) raced to a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 25.82. Balzano also added a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.83.
 
Freshman Molly Cooper (Abingdon, Md./Patterson Mill) logged her first victory at the collegiate level. The freshman swimmer recorded a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:23.31.
 
Taylor Newton (Olyphant, Pa./Scranton Prep) swam to two second place finishes and a third-place mark. Newton finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:56.53 and second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a mark of 12:06.36. Her third-place finish came in the 100-yard freestyle, having swam to a 1:02.46 mark.
 
Morgan Baughman (West Newton, Pa./Mount Pleasant) registered two second-place marks on the day. The sophomore freestyler took second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.17 and second in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 2:13.99.
 
The W&J women swept the relays to ensure the win over the Cougars. The unit of Garrett, Malone, Balzano and Baughman finished first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:00.33.
 
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quad of Balzano, Cooper, Newton and Baughman took first with a time of 1:51.72.
 
For the men, Micah Lohr (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) recorded a career day for the Presidents. Lohr took first-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:16.76 and in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:33.87.
 
Logan Marks (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) also racked up two first-place marks on the day. Marks won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.21 and the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:14.16.
 
Amauri Bonamy (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie School) registered his first collegiate win in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.16. He also tacked on a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 12:46.75.
 
Daniel Jeffries (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield Area) and March Yuan (Simi Valley, Calif./Oak Park) each added wins for W&J. Jeffries finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.74 while Yuan won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.45.
 
Zach Lloyd (Dillsburg, Pa./Lloyd Academy (Homeschooled)) logged a first-place finish in the 1-meter dive with a score of 182.55 and 307.43. Lloyd his second and final necessary qualifying score for the 1-mter dive (11 dives) regionals.
 
The men also swept the relay races, including a win in the 200-yard medley relay. The unit of Jeffries, Marks, Yuan and Aiden Filer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) raced to a 1:41.44 mark.
 
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quad of Nathaniel Harden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area), Lohr, Andrew Killen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carlynton) and Yuan took first with a time of 1:38.42.
 
W&J swimming & diving will head to Canton, Ohio after a short pause to compete in the Malone Invitational, starting Thursday (Nov. 21).
