WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College's men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 loss to first place Allegheny College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Sunday afternoon at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center.
The Presidents entered the match on a three-match winning streak after victories over conference opponents Waynesburg, Thiel, and Geneva. W&J is now 3-3 in the PAC and 6-8 overall. The Gators are 5-0 in the conference and 10-5 overall.
W&J battled through doubles play with each pairing winning some games on the scoresheet. However, the Gators claimed wins with respective scores of 8-2, 8-5, and 8-3.
The Presidents had their best chance of a victory at third singles where
Abhinav Yarramaneni (Mountainview, Calif. / Los Altos) put on an impressive battle with the match going to a third set tiebreaker with Will Jarvie. After losing the first set, Yarramaneni pulled out a 6-2 win to send him to a third-set tiebreaker. Yarramaneni ultimately fell short in the final set.
Sophomore
Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) and first-year
Nick Bussard (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) gave a commendable effort in singles play. Clarke finished the match with a loss of 6-3, 6-2 against Benedek Kaibas. Bussard battled in the first set before falling by scores of 7-5 and 6-2.
With the end of the regular season nearing, the Presidents will travel to Franciscan on Tuesday, April 16
before hosting Westminster on Thursday, April 18 at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center at 4:00 p.m. in the final regular season match.
