WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College swimming & diving teams dropped two bouts to conference foe Grove City on the Presidents' senior day. The men fell to a score of 161-129 while the women dropped a 171-92 decision.
The Presidents' men fall to 3-4-1 overall on the season and 3-2 in conference meets. The Presidents' women fell to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference meets.
Freshman diver
Zach Lloyd (Dillsburg, Pa./Lloyd Academy (Homeschooled)) highlighted W&J's efforts with a historic performance. Lloyd broke the W&J 1-meter dive record with a total score of 506.85 through 11 dives. The former record holder and current W&J diving coach,
Josh Vasko '17, previously held a best score of 500.10 in the 1-meter dive.
Logan Marks (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) logged two top finishes for the Presidents in the breaststroke. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Marks logged a first-place finish with a time of 2:06.63. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Marks placed second with a mark of 1:01.32.
Sibling and teammate
Aiden Marks (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) followed a similar stat line in the short-distance freestyle. Marks won the 50-yard freestyle with a quick time of 22.62 and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.52.
Ethan Glessner (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) picked up a victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 2:03.31. He also added a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.32.
Freshman
March Yuan (Simi Valley, Calif./Oak Park) logged three top finishes on the afternoon for W&J. His top performance came during the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event with a time of 2:03.47. Yuan also placed second in the 200-yard IM and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with respective times of 4:20.68 and 57.09.
Brody Souder (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) logged a victory in the distance freestyle for W&J. The dual-sport freshman reigned victorious in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a first-place finish and mark of 18:22.95.
Versatile Sophomore swimmer
Sophia Garrett (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) led the way for the W&J women. Garrett collected first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with respective times of 1:05.20 and 2:21.03.
Luna Balzano (El Portal, Fla./Broward Virtual School) followed up with a win in the 50-yard freestyle with a sprint time of 26.32. In the 100-yard butterfly, Balzano placed second with a time of 1:05.12.
Freshman diver
Amiyah White (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) finished first in the 1-meter dive with a total score of 317.70.
Maddie Malone (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) snagged a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke and placed third in the 400-yard IM with respective times of 2:49.34 and 5:20.09.
Sophomore sprinter
Morgan Baughman (West Newton, Pa./Mount Pleasant) logged a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.95.
The relay unit of Garrett, Malone, Balzano and Baughman registered a first-place placement with a time of 1:58.73 in the 200-yard medley relay.
The Presidents honored both seniors L. Marks and
Taylor Newton (Olyphant, Pa./Scranton Prep) during senior day festivities.
The Presidents divers travel to Clarion University to compete in the Dave Horvat Diving Invite on Friday (Jan. 31). Opening dives are scheduled to commence at 5:00 p.m.
