TRAFFORD, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College wrestling freshman
Joey Gardner (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) has been selected as the Presidents' Athletic Conference men's wrestling Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday (Dec. 8).
Gardner picked up five wins while competing in all three events on the week for the Presidents. He logged two victories on Thursday night against Waynesburg and Mount Union at 157 pounds, opening the night with a pin at the 1:46 mark in the first period of his initial match of the night against the Yellow Jackets. Against Mount Union, Gardner scored a 7-2 win by decision in the 157-pound bout. Gardner finished the week by placing sixth at the Ohio Northern Invitational at 157, opening up the invitational with a fall in 1:58, before scoring a 19-4 technical fall in 3:31, and a two-point reversal to upset the number two seed in the bracket in the third round. Gardner fell in the semifinals to the No. 3 seeded wrestler from Ohio Northern.
After a short break for the holidays, W&J will return to host the
Jeff Breese Invitational. The event will kick off at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 3) inside the Ross Recreation Center.
