PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team (11-4) won its spring opener against the Carlow Celtics (1-9).
The Presidents kicked off the spring season with a sweep of the doubles point, 1-0.
Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and
Keiran Moorhead (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) picked up a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. The teams of
Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and
Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) along with
Paisley Cole (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) and
Addy Jacobs (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) secured the victories at No. 2 and 3 doubles 6-0 sweeps.
After a close loss at No. 1 singles, Moorhead helped the Presidents regain the lead with a 6-1, 6-0 No. 2 singles win. Hamade doubled down for the Presidents with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles, 3-1.
The Celtics upended the Presidents at No. 4 singles to cut the W&J lead to 3-2. Cole and
Isabella Naddeo (Canonsburg, Pa./Trinity) collected wins at No. 5 and 6 singles to secure the 5-2 team win. Cole took her No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-2. Senior captain Naddeo won in a close 6-4, 7-6 battle at No. 6 singles.
The women's tennis team continues their spring campaign during spring break against Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday (March 10).
