FULL RESULTSPHILIPPI, W.Va. -- The Washington & Jefferson swimming and diving teams opened the 2014-15 season with wins in both portions of a season-opening tri-meet at Alderson Broaddus.
The women's squad began the year with a 167-82 win over Frostburg State (Md.) and a 149-95 victory against the host Battlers. The men topped FSU by a 168-83 count and Division II A-B, 135-107.
W&J's women's team opened up the event with a 200 medley relay win in 1:59.95 as
Alexandra Gartner,
Ann O'Connor,
Alexis Glenn and
Rachel Nye made up the team.
Madison Nervig won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:56.14.
Jessica Sweitzer won the 100 free (54.59) and 200 free (2:00.82), with
Jenny Matuszewski posting a 500 free win in 5:41.03.
For the men,
Jon Krail won all three events he competed in as he was timed at 10:38.15 in the 1000 freestyle, 5:06.16 in the 500 free and 2:08.51 in the 200 individual medley.
Chris Ratliff picked up 100 (49.93) and 200 (1:50.84) freestyle wins on the day.
In the 100 and 200 backstroke events,
Nick Willison posted victories with times of 56.14 and 2:02.17, respectively.
The men's match against A-B went down to the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, as
Ben Henrichs,
Owen Hanna, Matt Noel and Willison touched the wall in 3:22.41, nearly three seconds ahead of the hosts.
The W&J women will be in action on Wednesday, Nov. 5 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Chatham. Both teams open up the home slate for 2014-15 on Friday, Nov. 7 against West Virginia Wesleyan with a 7 p.m. start time.
