FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Washington & Jefferson wrestling team completed its first-ever trip to the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals, hosted at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The Presidents dropped their three dual meets to nationally-ranked foes, beginning with a 27-16 decision against No. 11 Cornell College (Iowa), before falling to No. 12 Ithaca (N.Y.), 32-6, and No. 25 Heidelberg (Ohio), 37-10.
Against Cornell,
Jacob Spearman earned a victory by fall 1:06 into the bout at 133 pounds.
Nick Carr, the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds earned a 12-4 major decision in the weight class against the Rams and then
Sonnieboy Blanco and
William Oberschelp went back-to-back in 7-5 decisions at 174 and 184, respectively.
In the Ithaca match, Spearman suffered a 2-0 setback against the Bombers' Alex Gomez, the fourth-ranked wrestler at 133 in the nation.
Daniel Pommerer earned a 3-2 decision at 141 before Carr posted a 3-1 sudden victory 1 win over Kevin Collins, ranked eighth at 157. Blanco came close at 174 before falling, 8-7.
W&J closed out the event by opposing Heidelberg. Spearman captured a major decision, 12-4, at 133 and Blanco earned a forfeit win at 174. Carr did not compete against the Student Princes.
The Presidents return to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the East-West Duals, hosted by Messiah (Pa.).
