WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's and women's soccer programs are teaming up to help raise funds to beat cancer as part of the Red Card Cancer initiative.
Men's head coach
Ian McDonald and women's head coach
Pete Curtis have chosen to hold their Red Card Cancer fundraiser on Tuesday, Oct. 27 when the Presidents host Presidents' Athletic Conference opponent Westminster at 5:30 p.m. (men) and 7:30 p.m. (women) at Alexandre Stadium. As part of the events, the teams will be selling Red Card Cancer bracelets for $3 and t-shirts for $8 (students) or $10 (adults). For more information on ordering a t-shirt,
please download the order form available here. Orders are due to Dorothy Carter by October 20, 2015, no later than 9:00 p.m.
Red Card Cancer began in the Fall of 2009 at NCAA Division II Bloomsburg University when the Huskies' head men's soccer coach, Paul Payne, started the program as a tribute to his longtime friend and mentor, Joe Bochiccio, the women's soccer coach at Scranton. Payne chose to honor his friend after Bochicchio passed away from melanoma, campaigning to raise awareness about cancer in the soccer community and raise funds for research.
In the first year, Red Card Cancer raised over $5,000 across the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in its first day. By 2010, the program spread across state borders and more teams reached out to get involved. That year, RCC joined forces with The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins University and the D.C. United of Major League Soccer and helped expand the program even more.
Today, all proceeds from Red Card Cancer benefit cancer research at Johns Hopkins' Kimmel Cancer Center.
