Blanco repeats as All-America, finishes third at 174

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Senior Sonnieboy Blanco (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City) finished with four-straight wins to become only the third multiple-time All-American in Washington & Jefferson wrestling history as he claimed third place at 174 at the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships.

Blanco repeats as an All-American after finishing fifth a season ago. It marks the 13th time that a President has gone on to an All-America finish, while Blanco joins Dave Krivus (1981-83) and Nick Carr (2014-15) as the only wrestlers with multiple All-America finishes. He also finishes his storied career as the W&J all-time leader in career wins (124), single-season victories (42) and seventh in career winning percentage (.821; 124-27).

The seventh-seeded Blanco opened the tournament on Friday morning with a 12-5 decision over Javier Reyes of Luther (Iowa). He suffered his lone loss of the tournament and just his third of the season in the second round, bowing out of the championship bracket to No. 2-seeded Eric DeVos of Wartburg (Iowa) by pinfall in 48 seconds on Friday night. Entering the consolation bracket that same night, Blanco won by a 6-5 decision against Mike Maksimovic of Cornell College (Iowa) to guarantee himself at least eighth place and All-America honors heading into Saturday.

Three close matches during Saturday's morning session allowed Blanco to earn third place. He opened the morning by way of a 6-4 decision over The College of New Jersey's Dan Kilroy and then topped Delaware Valley's Benjamin Schweiger by a 7-5 count in the consolation semifinals. That set up his match-up against Cortland State's Colin Barber, where Blanco used a pair of takedowns to earn the 4-2 decision.

His third-place showing gives W&J at least a third-place finisher in four consecutive years as Nick Carr was second at 165 in 2014 before winning the national title at 157 in 2015, and Jacob Spearman boasted a third-place showing in 2016. It also marks the fifth straight season that W&J has had the highest finishing Presidents' Athletic Conference wrestler at the national championships.
