WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson held a 10-point lead heading into the final two bouts of the night, but was unable to hold on for the win as Waynesburg snuck past the Presidents, 24-22.
The Presidents' Athletic Conference loss drops W&J to 4-5 in dual matches this year and 0-2 in the PAC with the Si Ostrach Duals at Case Western Reserve looming this coming Saturday. In Cleveland, the Presidents will wrestle the host Spartans, Brockport (N.Y.) and John Carroll.
With the 10-point lead through eight weight classes, W&J suffered a pair of pins at 197 and 285 to seal the narrow defeat.
After forfeiting both the 125- and 133-pound weight classes, the Presidents won the middle six weights on the evening.
Mike Heinl (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) got W&J on the board with a 9-2 decision at 141 before
Sam Florentino (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) earned a 3-2 decision at 149.
Josh Armstrong (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) got the first bonus points of the day for W&J when he needed just 1:07 to earn the pin at 157 and tie the match at 12-12.
Hunter Neely (Cokeburg, Pa./Bentworth) and
Jared Walker (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) earned decision victories at 165 and 174, respectively, as Neely posted a 9-3 margin and Walker recorded a 5-0 shutout.
William Oberschelp (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) pushed W&J's lead out to 10 points, 22-12, when he registered a 13-1 major decision at 184 pounds.
