WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team is set to host Waynesburg for a Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals match Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start with the winner advancing to face top-seeded Westminster College in next week's semifinal round.

HOW THEY GOT HERE
W&J qualified for the tournament as the No. 4 seed after finishing the regular season with a 6-2-1 conference mark and a 9-7-2 overall record. The Presidents enter the conference championship playing its best soccer all season. W&J won its final four regular season contests. Sophomore Maddie Dittrich (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) tallied the game-winning goal in a 3-2 double overtime win on Oct. 16. W&J has since won consecutive road games at Thiel (2-1), at Geneva (5-2) and at Bethany (4-1) to finish the regular season slate. The lone conference blemishes for W&J were losses to Wesminster (2-0) on Oct. 2 and Chatham (2-0) on Oct. 9.

Waynesburg earned the No. 5 seed after posting a 4-4-1 league record and an 8-7-1 overall mark. The Yellow Jackets enter the tournament winners of three straight. They won at Saint Vincent (2-1) on Oct. 20 before earning home wins versus Thiel (4-1) on Oct. 23 and Geneva (7-1) on Oct. 26.  Waynesburg opened the conference slate with three consecutive losses to Franciscan (2-1), Grove City (1-0) and Chatham (1-0).

HEAD-TO-HEAD SERIES
The two teams played to a scoreless double overtime draw during their regular season meeting on Oct. 13 in Washington. Waynesburg out-shot W&J by a 19-7 margin and hit the cross bar twice in the draw. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) made a season-high 10 saves for W&J.

The Presidents hold a 48-20-3 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs. Goals have been hard to come by in recent meetings, as neither squad has recorded more than one in a game over the past four meetings. During the spring season, W&J earned a 1-0 victory at Waynesburg on March 30. Then-senior Hannah Johnston scored on a header in the 58th minute of play for the lone score of the match. The two teams played to a 1-1 double overtime draw in 2019, as Lexey Finney registered the lone goal for W&J. The Yellow Jackets have not won against the Presidents since a 4-3 overtime win in 2013.
