WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College wrestling team secured three individual championships Saturday at the annual W&J Invitational, which is hosted in the Ross Recreation Center.
The Presidents finished in second place in the team standings, trailing just Lycoming University at the competitive event.
Hunter Swedish (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley) secured the title at 133 pounds,
Bryce Rodriguez-Uram (Carnegie, Pa. / Carlynton) took the top spot at 141 pounds and
Brayden Roscosky (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area) finished in first place in the 184-pound bracket.
Swedish, the reigning PAC Wrestler of the Week, took home the title after posting four victories on the day. Swedish opened the day with an 18-2 tech fall victory before adding a 19-3 tech. fall victory. Swedish then won by an 8-1 decision in the semifinals. Swedish capped his day with an 8-2 victory over Brendan Ramsey of Jamestown Community College in the title match at 133.
Rodriguez-Uram put together a strong collegiate debut Saturday. After missing the action last weekend at Lycoming, Rodriguez-Uram posted four victories, the first three of which came by fall. Rodriguez-Uram defeated Wiley Kahler of Lycoming by a 10-6 score in the title bout at 141 pounds.
Roscosky secured the title at 184 pounds after posting a 3-0 showing Saturday. After receiving a bye, Roscosky won by fall in 2:33 in the quarterfinals. Roscosky then secured an 11-2 major decision victory in the semifinals over Ikia Garcia of Southern Virginia. The semifinal win set up a rematch of last year's PAC Championship match at 184 pounds. This time it was Roscosky getting the better of Thiel's Bryce McCloskey by a 3-2 score.
Tyler Ratledge (Houston, Del. / Lake Forest) and
Logan Marko (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central) also placed within the top six spots at their respective weights.
Ratledge finished fifth at 125 pounds rattled off four consecutive wins after suffering a defeat in his first match of the day. Ratledge won by tech. fall (23-8) over Jasup Spragg of Fairmont State in the fifth place match.
Marko claimed the fourth spot at 165 pounds following a 2-2 day. Marko advanced to the semifinals with a 7-0 decision and a victory by fall (3:35) in the quarterfinals. Marko suffered a tough 7-5 setback in the semis before dropping a 12-7 decision in the third place match.
W&J returns to competition on Saturday, Nov. 19 when they travel to the Waynesburg University Duals. The Presidents will face Division II Shippensburg (11 a.m.) as well as Division III programs Messiah (12:30 p.m.) and RIT (2 p.m.).
