WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College wrestling team opened competition for the 2022-23 season Sunday when they competed at the Lycoming University Invitational. The Presidents saw several wrestlers put together unbeaten records during a busy day of competition.
Five different Presidents finished with 3-0 records in Sunday's season debut.
Jamal Lewis (York, Pa./York Suburban) posted an impressive debut in the Red and Black. The freshman secured three wins by fall at 165 pounds. Lewis opened his day by pinning Ayden DeForest of Oneonta State in just 56 seconds. Lewis topped Hunter Charles of Lycoming in 1:01 and finished his day with a win by fall in 1:24 over Sam Wegesin of Otterbein.
Tyler Ratledge (Houston, Del./Lake Forest) went 3-0 in the 125 pound B bracket. Ratledge won by fall (6:26) over Giovanni Russo of Oneonta State. He then added a tech. fall victory over Leonard Cocca of Lycoming by a score of 21-4. Ratledge wrapped up a strong day by a 16-4 major decision over Brayden Newman of Lycoming.
At the 133 pound C bracket,
Hunter Swedish (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley) put together a 3-0 day. Swedish won by major decision (12-2) over Joey Powers of Cortland State in his first match of the day. Sweidish then tacked on an 18-4 major decision victory over Eric Saddler of Otterbein. Swedish finished his day with a win by fall (4:59) over Peter Sacco of Oneonta State.
Brayden Roscosky (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area) picked up right where he left off after a strong freshman season. Roscosky went 3-0 in the 184 pound A bracket on Sunday. Roscosky opened the day with a 22-5 tech. fall victory over Tyler Goodemote of Cortland State. Roscosky then made quick work of James Ellis of Lycoming to win by fall in 1:32. Roscosky finished off his day by securing a 5-2 victory over Logan Carmell of Otterbein.
Colton Minerva (North Huntingdon, Pa. / Norwin) went 3-0 at the 141 pound A bracket. Minerva opened with an 8-1 decision over St. John Fisher's Mason Welch. Minerva then edged Noah Orser of Cortland State in a 5-3 decision. The sophomore thn capped his day with a 10-1 win over Ryan Holt of Cortland State.
The Presidents now return home to compete at the W&J Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 12. Competition gets underway at 9:45 a.m. in the Ross Recreation Center.
