WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The W&J wrestling team finished in seventh place Saturday at the 11th annual Waynesburg University Invitational. The Presidents had three wrestlers reach the semifinal round before settling for fourth place at their respective weights. W&J logged 55 team points at the annual event, which is typically held the first Saturday in January.
Hunter Swedish (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) advanced to the semifinals at 133 pounds. Swedish went 3-2 on the day. He opened with a 10-6 victory by decision over Brandon D'Egidio of Heidelberg. Swedish then recorded a win by fall (1:36) over Nicholas Dawson of Alma College. After dropping his semifinal match, Swedish cruised to a 20-5 tech. fall victory over D'Egidio in a rematch. Swedish suffered a setback in the third place match to finish in fourth.
Logan Marko (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central) earned a fourth place finish at 165 pounds. Marko went 2-2 on the day after receiving an opening-round bye. Marko won by fall (3:58) over Fairmont State's Evan Thompson in the quarterfinal round. Marko then lost by a 5-1 decision in the semifinals to Carson Pottenger of Heidelberg. Marko added a win by fall (3:00) over Camron Callahan of Muskingum.
Nicholas Funovits placed fourth at 184 pounds. Funovits put together a 2-2 record on the day as he claimed a win by fall (4:16) in the quarterfinal round over Ashton Miller of Alderson Broaddus. After dropping a match in the semifinals, Funovits earned a win by an 8-6 decision over Ayden Bishoff of Waynesburg.
Bryce Rodriguez-Uram (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) finished in sixth place at 141 pounds. After dropping his opening match, the freshman won four consecutive matches to reach the fifth place match. Rodriguez-Uram won three consecutive matches by fall before adding another win by decision. He concluded his day with a 4-2 record.
Trevor Manley (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) recorded a pair of wins by fall at 285 pounds. The sophomore beat Isaiah Kramer of Heidelberg in 16 seconds and downed Will Shiber of Johns Hopkins in 4:05.
W&J hosts Waynesburg in a conference dual match on Thursday, Jan. 12. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
