W&J wrestling earns road win over Waynesburg in PAC dual


WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College wrestling team picked up a victory by a 31-12 score over Waynesburg University Wednesday evening in Greene County. 
 
The Presidents' Athletic Conference win moves W&J to 2-1 in league matches. The loss drops Waynesburg to 0-2 in the PAC. 
 
Michael Cruz (Malvern, Pa. / Great Valley) and Daniel Verscharen (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) opened with the victories by forfeit respectively at 125 and 133 pounds. After opening the night with a pair of wins by forfeit, W&J added three more wins in succession to take control of the match.
 
Hunter Swedish (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) won by major decision at 141 pounds to make it 16-0. Taylor Smith (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) edged Cole Homet by an 8-7 score at 149 pounds to make the score 19-0. 
 
Bryce Rodriguez-Uram (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) earned the victory at 157 pounds by a 6-2 score by decision. The win extended the Presidents' lead to 22-0. 
 
Jiovanni DeChicchis (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) edged Jacob Wilson by an 8-7 score at 165 pounds. W&J picked up one last win at 285 pounds, as Trevor Manley (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) won by forfeit. 
 
W&J returns to competition at the Ken Ober Memorial Tournament hosted by Elizabethtown College on Saturday, Jan. 27.
